If you own cavies, have owned cavies, or want to raise cavies,
there is one question that always comes up.... What kind of cage??
When selecting a cage for your piggy, here are some
things to consider
- Guinea pigs must be on a solid-bottomed cage, NOT wire.
Cavies are not made like other rodents or rabbits, they are not as agile and
they don't have large feet to distribute their weight on. Cavies on wire break
toes and legs, get bumblefoot, and catch colds much easier because of the
constant draft.
- Although cavies are not always known as jumpers, some can -
and do - jump. It is always a good idea to have some kind of top or lid on the
cage, so they can't get out - and more importantly, so nothing can get in.
- Cages range in size from itty-bitty to gigantic. Though I do
not have a set standard of how big I think a cage should be, the bigger
the better. Always err on the side of a larger cage; you will have a much
healthier, happier, more content cavy.
- Make sure your cage is sturdy enough for the surrounding
environment. If you have dogs, cats, small children or other pets, you will need
to consider getting a sturdy cage.
