Grooming Short-haired Cavies

If you don't know what breed your cavy is, you can go here

Americans/American Satins

Grooming supplies; baby or soft cat brush, Q-tips, nail trimmers, toothbrush, baby wipes or spray bottle and sponge

The American guinea pig is the easiest to groom. They have a short coat, so all you need to do is rub your hand over them a few times to keep their coat clean. Here's a "schedule" to groom your cavy before an upcoming show.

3 days before show- Wash pig. Use baby shampoo or a VERY mild shampoo on them. Do not wash them with a dog shampoo. Put a towel at the bottom of the sink and fill with lukewarm water. Get the pig wet, and squirt a dime-sized dollop of shampoo on their coat. Lather it well, and don't get it in the guinea pig's eyes, ears, or nose. After you rinse the pig all the way off, dry it partway with a towel. Use a hairdryer to dry the pig the rest of the way, and make sure the air from the hair dryer is not too hot. After you wash it, it would be a good idea to clean it's cage before putting it back to prevent staining. If you have a light-colored cavy, it's best to give it apples as a snack, so you don't stain it's mouth as you might with carrots, cilantro, etc.

Day before show- Clean ears and trim nails as described in the all-breed grooming section. Make sure your cavy doesn't have any pee stains. If it does, wash them off.

Day of show- Take unscented baby wipes or squirt bottle and sponge, and rub the fur with the growth of the fur vigorously. On your way up to the table, rub the piggy from head to rump.

Abyssinians/Abyssinian Satins

Grooming items; Toothbrush, Q-tips, nail trimmers, cornmeal

NEVER wash a show Abyssinian, it will ruin it's  coat. If your pig isn't for show, then you can wash it, but otherwise you will ruin the texture and harshness of your piggies' rosettes.

A few days before the show- Take a toothbrush, and brush all of the cavy's rosettes, from the center out. Trim the cavy's nails, and clean its' ears as described in the all-breed section.

Day of show- you should brush all the rosettes with the toothbrush again. Avoid petting your cavy, as doing so will smoosh the rosettes and make your cavy not look as good.

White Crested

Grooming items: Toothbrush, Q-tips, nail trimmers, baby brush

Three days before show-You can wash your White Crested like you would an American. I don't think washing your crested will ruin it's rosette.

day before show- clip nails and clean ears as described in the all-breed section.

Day of show- Take a baby brush, toothbrush, spray bottle and sponge with you to the show. At the show, brush your pig, sponge it, and brush it's crest with the toothbrush. You can rub the cavy from head to rump on your way to the table, but don't rub it's crest.

Teddy/Teddy Satins

Grooming items: Toothbrush, metal comb, slicker brush, nail trimmers, Q-tips, spray bottle, hair dryer

Don't wash a show Teddy unless you have to, then wash it 2-3 weeks before a show. For the week leading up to a show, you can lightly mist the Teddy with water every day and blow-dry the teddies fur in the 'correct' way (for a teddy), which is toward the head. Take the comb and brush all the hair toward the head, then pick up the tips with the slicker brush and brush towards the head.

Ear cleaning and toenail clipping as for all breeds.
