Click one of the images below for a larger picture Teddies Teddy Satin Note: Whenever the name Teddy is used below with a *, it means Teddy Satin as well. Information for Teddies and Teddy Satins Description/About the Teddy: The Teddy is currently a popular breed. Their coat is plush and they are fluffy looking. They come in almost all the varieties available (not Tan). If you are getting a Teddy* for show, you should look for a Teddy* with a dense, kinky coat. The ideal Teddy* coat should resemble a brillo pad. When petting a Teddy*, you pet it from rump to head, not like you would pet other breeds. This breed is sometimes called 'Teddy Bear' by newbies, but that is incorrect. This breed is just called 'Teddy', 'Teddy Bears' are a type of hamster. Note: Satin types of any breed can get a problem called 'hypocalcaemia', where the animal goes into a 'calcium shock', has tremors, gets shaky, and looks like it's having a seizure. If your cavy is exhibiting signs of this, you can crush up a calcium tablet (TUMS, etc.) in water and give some orally to the pig every few hours until they stop. If not caught, this condition can progress to death. Grooming: A show Teddy* shouldn't be washed before a show. If it needs to be washed, wash it 3-4 weeks before the show with a non-softening shampoo. If it's a show pig you should also rub their coat toward their head, otherwise you will flatten their coat. One way to keep their coat in good shape is to mist them (lightly :) with water and blow dry their coat (again, towards the coat) every day for a week before a show. This will better train their coats to stand up. Availability: Teddies are popular, but Teddy Satins are harder to find. They are most popular in the broken Variety, with Agouti-patched animals being the most popular in this area (Southern CA).
