Mouth Problems
The most common problem is when the guinea pig's front teeth have grown too long., this is called malocclusion. If this happens, you can either trim the teeth yourself, or you can take it to the vet's. To trim your pig's teeth, take wire cutters or heavy duty nail trimmers and trim the teeth back to normal length. If one of the front teeth has been knocked out, trim the other tooth to the same length, even if that means cutting it all the way back to the gums. If your cavy's tooth is loose, pull it out if it seems it will come out easily, and trim the other tooth to the same length. Feed your guinea pig soft food; pellets soaked in water, soft oatmeal, applesauce, or fruit and veggie baby food. Your guinea pig's teeth will grow back quicker than you think, because piggy's teeth are constantly growing.
If your piggy is pawing at it's mouth, can't eat, is drooling, and if the front teeth aren't too long, your cavy most likely has overgrown molars. You cannot trim the molars yourself without seriously putting your cavy at risk, so, off to the vet's you should go.
Of the cavy's molars aren't too long, your pig may have an abscess on the inside of its' mouth. To treat this, you should also take it to the vet's.
