Coronets

Here are some items that I find essential or very helpful to have on hand.

Saline Solution

This is very good for washing out wounds and eyes. As it is a sterile solution, it can be used for many things

Lubricating jelly

Good for assisting with difficult births.

Gatorade

Good for nursing/sick cavies, for electrolytes; and sugar for pigs at shows; for dehydrated pigs, and for stressed, nursing or pregnant pigs. Pedialyte can also be used.

Syringes

1 cc are more important than 3cc, but both are helpful. Use for force-feeding (without the needle!!!)and administering medications. Also helpful for measuring medications.

Cotton balls and Q-tips

Very helpful for cleaning ears, wounds, etc.

Pill splitter and pill administrator

Nice for crushing medicine, vitamin C tablets, Calcium tablets and other medications. The force - feeder is good for giving pills without being bitten.

Baby cereal

For feeding sick or young pigs. The best kind is the rice or wheat-based.

Vick's or other vapor rub

Good for pigs with colds or congestion. Put a little around cage and above nose. Also good to dab on top of noses and rumps of pigs being introduced to each other (so that they only smell the rub), and it's easier to introduce them.

Eyedropper

Serves same purpose of syringe, but a holds a little more. Some pigs like this better because it's easier to drink from.

Carrying cage

Good to have on hand if you need to rush your pig to the vet. Cardboard boxes work well for temporary use. Cat carriers or lightweight specially-made cavy carriers should be considered for more regular use.
