Feeds

Your cavy should always have access to a good quality cavy pellet. These pellets should be plain with no mix-ins (baked pieces, corn, dried veggies, etc.). These 'mixed' pellets are not good for your cavy, because 1) they are too fattening, and 2) the added "goodies" are actually not any good, and can block up your cavy's intestine.

A plain pellet should be a nice green color, without excess dust and should be free from any pests. Pellets can be bought from pet stores in small quantities, but can also be bought from feed stores. Feed stores are usually much cheaper, and sell bags of feed in 25 or 50 lb. bags. Make sure not to get more than you can use within 90 days of the milling date (check the bad for this), or the pellet will lose the vitamin C content. If the feed store doesn't have the kind you need, they will often order it for you. Some common brands are

Some breeders use Manna Pro pellets for lactating rabbits. Though the pellet provides no vitamin C it is an otherwise good, wholesome formula. Vitamin C is them supplemented through the water. However, the water must be changed daily and fresh vitamin C added for the vitamin C to stay useful.

Supplements

Though it's not a good idea to buy cavy feeds with "goodies" mixed in, there are some safe treats you can add to your feed.

Tip: make a supplement 'mix' for your particular cavy and place a spoonful on top of their feed every once in a while. If you mix in the supplements with the regular pellet, the cavy will paw out all the plain pellets to get the yummy treats.

Sunflower seeds (raw, with shells removed) - good for pregnant/nursing/young/show conditioning cavies. We especially use these for our Teddies and longhairs, as the seeds supply a good protein to help coat growth.

Rolled Oats - good for all pigs. Rolled oats will help a skinny pig gain weight, and are especially good for pigs during the winter.

Calf Manna - good for young/pregnant/nursing/show conditioning sows. This is not recommended for boars over 6 months of age as it can give them stones.

Raisins - good for any cavies. Give in moderation! Raisins are very sugary and should only be given occasionally.

Whole grain cereal/Joe's O's - our piggies love these, and they are good for them too. Good for any pigs - but remember, moderation is still the key!

Sweet Feed/COB - good for young/pregnant/nursing/show conditioning pigs. Sweet feed and COB (corn/oats/barley) is essentially a variety of grains mixed with molasses, so it should also be given in moderation.

Alfalfa leaves - I like to give my coated longhaired cavies a little sprinkling of alfalfa leaves over their pellets so that the hay stems don't have a chance to get stuck in their coats.
